Statement of Intent

First and foremost, colour plays an important role in visual storytelling and illustrating. It helps to deliver a message and evoke emotion, such as a warm hue is able to bring happiness; while cool hues can deliver a sense of depression(Rider, 2009). However, after completing the independent and external project, the designer understands that designers should also focus on other details while doing design instead of just focusing on the colour scheme, such as layout design. Although the designer is more interested in doing illustration, she still believes that layout design is extremely important as it is a fundamental branch of graphic design that concerns the arrangement of text and visuals. An effective layout helps the design look more attractive, and helps the audiences to understand the message clearly. Layout design can be applied in many designs, especially web design and advertising. For instance, hierarchy is important in doing layout design. It refers to the order of the elements in a layout. A good hierarchy helps produce a good reading flow(Corrigan, n.d). Other than that, the designer believes that adding texture and details while illustrating can increase the artwork’s completion. Adding texture enables the design to look more unique and stylized (Weinstein, n.d). In addition, adding brush strokes as decorations while illustrating is able to make the illustrations look more delicate. Hence, the designer believes that details help improve a design completion, and this ensures the audience to have a better experience while looking at the artworks. ​
