Screen Printing Workshop

There was a screen printing workshop on this Thursday(23/05/2019). Our lecturer was going to teach and demo about how to do screen printing. Before she started demo, she told us some information/knowledge about screen printing. For example, the things that we should prepare. She recommended us to buy the materials from a shop which was called HAIKUANG. She mentioned that the materials there were better than other bookstore. However, some of us had brought the material from the bookstore nearby. Therefore, she told us avoid to have thick line when we do our design, because she scared that the, machine could not expose nicely.

Then she started to demo a few ways of screen printing to us. First was using the machine. Before we wanted to expose by using the machine, a blue emulsion which was light sensitive would be put on the screen. After it was dry, we would put the screen and the design in the machine. The screen was washed down after expose leaving design area clear of emulsion. Then you could put the ink on the screen and use the squeegee to spread the ink on screen. The ink would go through the screen.

Another ways of doing screen printing was using the papers. First you had to cut out the design that you want. The area which you cut out was the one where the ink would go through the screen. After you finished cutting, then you could put the ink on the screen and started using the squeegee to spread the ink through the screen.

After our lecturer did the demo, we could do some try to do some screen print by using the paper or the screen which had exposed. My friends and I would like to try doing screen print with a screen which had exposed.

Then, our lecturer wanted us to form a group of 3. There was an assignment which we had to do a scaled-up outline/solid shape of our research zone/ SS15. Then we needed to use screen printing to print in out any material with A3 size.

Although our lecturer said that this work can be passed up in the end of this semester, but she still mentioned that she hoped us could finish it within the two weeks. This was because she may give us the others assignment in future.

I had form a group with my classmates on that day.I hope I can have a enjoyable time with them, and I also hope that we can finish it quickly, so that I can focus on the other work.

Our lecturer had also shown us how to do Lino print. She had brought a sample came to workshop, and she did demo to us as well. Lino print was a way of printing that I never learn before. It was interesting. I thought it was very difficult for us to cut very details.
