Week 1- Reflection on “How To Find And Do Work That You Love(Ikigai)”

This week, our lecturer ask us to watch a video which is about “How To Find And Do Work That You Love(Ikigai)”. This video can help us to find and do work that we love, so that we can know the direction and interest when we're looking for job. In graphic design industry, there're many works or jobs can be found, such as advertisement design, illustration, packaging and product design, and so on. To start working on our assignment and project, we're encouraged to find out our interested and direction of jobs.

In this video, we learn about "Ikigai". Ikigai is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being". To start finding the direction or purpose in life, Mr Chris Do has showed a Ikigai Venn diagram. In this diagram, I have to list down what am I loves, what am I good at, what job do I think pays the bills, and what do I think the world needs.

After doing this diagram, I have a better understanding for myself, and I slightly know my direction and interest in graphic design industry. So... what can I do/what kind of jobs I am interested with? My answer is MANY! Maybe I can draw and share illustration online? I can include illustration when I am doing advertisement design or packaging design?

I think there's a lot of jobs I can do, it's just how I look into it. In fact, I don't think we can definitely get the jobs we want, but we can try to change our minds and look at each job from a different perspective. I believe that every job and design has its meaning. I hope I will not be restricted by any job. If I really don’t like that job, I can draw the illustrations and post it on the Internet, such as Instagram, Facebook and so on. Just like the illustrators that I like, they will record their lives with illustrations and post them on the Internet. If you want to be a "great" designer, like design something meaningful and meet the needs of the world, then you can also create people's awareness by using the illustration or design as well. For example, you can design some advertisements which are about environmental awareness and so on.
