This Thursday is public holiday, so our lecturer asked us to study a video was recorded by her. After watching the video, we have to make use of what we have learned when we write our blog. For the second project, we have to choose 10 projects from Graphic Design Practice Map. Then, we need to do research and categories them in the 4 fields of design.

1. PIG 05049 - Christien Meindertsma

This is a book about the consumer products which made from a pig called 05049. In this book, the author recorded how people use different part of this pig to made different consumer products, such as soap, paint, bullet, cigarettes and many other products that we usually cannot related to. The purpose of the author to create this book is using art to expose the hidden process and connections of our modern life. She mentioned that we actually have no idea what materials are used for a product, we should find it out when we are using it.

I think this project will be categorised in discursive design. This is because, I think she want to create attention to let people be more concerned on the products' ingredients, so that we can use those products with peace of mind.

2. Before I Die - Candy Chang

The designer created this project by using a wall on an abandoned house in New Orleans after the death of someone she loved. She painted with chalkboard paint and some words "Before I Dei I want to...", so anyone who walk by could reflect on death and life with their personal aspiration by using a piece of chalk. This project are still going on in many different places and countries.

I think this project is under experimental design and discursive design. The reason why I put it under experimental design is because I think the process of people writing their own aspirations on the wall is a progress of the project. For me, this project may not have a final outcome because the people will keep writing. Therefore, this project is more focus on the progress.

The reason why I also put it under discursive design is because the purpose of this project is want the people to think about and reflect on death and life. Many of us, especially Asian people always avoid to talk about it. Maybe by joining this project, people can have more understanding about death and life.

3. Airbnb - Design Studio

This project is about design Airbnb logo which named "Bélo", its means "belonging". The idea of this logo comes froma head to represent people, a location icon to represent place, a heart for love and then an A for Airbnb. The reason why they want to create a logo with this meaning is because a traveler can feel at home anywhere through their service.

I think this project is under commercial design. This is because the logo is designed for Airbnb as a logo, and Airbnb use it in their business. They ant their customer feel goo when they are live in Airbnb. Airbnb can earn profit when put this design in marketing. Not only that, through this simple logo, their customer can remember this company easily as well, and they may choose Airbnb as hostel again when they go travel.

4. Tactile Typography - Side by side

From I have researched about, tactile typography is a project that the designer play typography design with different materials. For example, coffee bean, honey, chocolate and cardboard, rubber bands and so on. The designers from Side by Side like to explore and do experiments by using different kind of material, they enjoy the progress.

I think this project is under experimental design. This is because the designers are enjoy the progress rather than focus on the outcome. Not only that, from what I have research on their page, they mentioned that they like to explore when doing deign. I can also feel that they are really like to try new and different material when they are doing typography design.

5. Umeda Hospital - Kenya Hara

This project is about a "washable sign" which is placed in Umeda Hospital. White clothes are the material of this design, and the words are print on it. Then, the white clothes will be put on the sign. When it become dirty, it can be easily washed and replaced, just like taking off socks. The concept of this project is "Cleanliness is the best service that a hospital can provide". The way of how Hara design the sign can completely convey this message to the people, as you will not know that sign can also be washed in one day.

I think this project is under responsible design. The final outcome of the design is useful for the hospital. It can help the hospital to have clean and beautiful signboard. Besides, the medical stuff can keep it very easily, just need to take it off and wash it. When people walk into this hospital, I can sure that they can feel clean when they look at these signboard. Even though I look at them through pictures, I can also feel that the hospital can provide medical services in a very clean and secure place.

6. MaGuffin Magazine

This magazine is a biannual design, it is about art and design. The style of this magazine is mixing texts with cinematic stills, still life artworks, diagrammatics, illustrative and iconographic. So basically you can see a lot of pictures about many different artworks as well as writing. Each edition of the magazine takes an object and explores the manifold stories it generates and uncovers the personal and sometimes curious relationships we have with the stuff that surrounds us.

I think this project is under responsible design. As a designer, I think this magazine is very useful. I can learn a lot of information/knowledge about art and design. From what I have researched about, , the publication largely leans towards the simple joy of revealing the idiosyncrasies and legacies of the commonplace or the overlooked. By reading this magazine, the reader can look back/look into these legacies of the commonplace or the overlooked by people.

7. Weare - Moving Brands

Weare is a project/product that the designers can co-create garments with their consumers. The concept of this project is everyone should be able to participate in fashion. It has a website where the consumers can create pixellated black and white images that will appear as part of the pattern on garments.

I think this project can be categorised under experimental design and commercial design. The reason why I put it under experiment design is because the designers spend more time on co-create the products with their customers. If they really want to make a product who can help them to earn more profits, they can just design a final product and sell it. However, after the designer adjust and refined the design, they put it in the market and sold it. Therefore, I think it can be categorised under commercial design as well. (Maybe this is one of their business strategy, let the customers buy their own design HAHAHA)

8. It's not happening here, but it is happening now - Amnesty International/Walker

This is poster campaign which put issue of human right abuse right in front of our eyes. The photo of poster is meticulously matched with its specific surroundings. Each post shown the actual scenes of human right abuse from all around the world. The posters were made by using photographs which were taken by the reporters who recorded abuse as it happened. The aim was to sensitize people to the issues of human rights and to stimulate debate.

I think this campaign is under discursive design. This is because the purpose of this campaign is to create awareness of human right abuse. I think this campaign is very successful as many people who walk by can be attracted by the poster and many people try to discuss about this issue online.

9. This Girl Can - FCB Inferno

This is a campaign which harness social media to encourage more women to be active. It was developed by Sport England to promote sport amongst women. Based on a research by Sport England, two million fewer women in England regularly work out compared to men. The purpose of this campaign is reduce that gap and inspire women to be more physically active.

I think this campaign is under responsible design. Through this campaign, I think there are many women can built their confidence as well as be more active. Doing sport is a very important thing in our daily life as it can help us to maintain muscle and health. I like the purpose if this campaign because there are many women neglect to do sports after they get married. They are busy with take care of their family members. I am glad that there are many people take this issue seriously after this event.

10. Adidas lab - Kin

This is an event which Adidas wanted their customers visitors to try out their products in a new and innovative way. Through this event, their customer can try, feel and even wear their products. The designers created a series of interactive challenges that pitched guests against each other and crucially a series of international sports stars. People will check-in with an RFID wristband and their results are synced onto a digital leaderboard, shared on YouTube and stored on a unique app designed for the event.

For this event, I would like to categorised it under commercial design. This is because I think this event/project can help Adidas attract more customers as well as profits. Through this event, the customers can try to wear their products. If some fo them are interested with the products, then they may buy it after the event. For me, I think this event is really interesting. Usually, we will not have a chance to try a sport shoes by this way.
