There are 4 fields of design by Tharp and Tharp 2006, which are commercial design, experimental design, responsible design, and discursive design.
Commercial design
Commercial design, commonly understood as industrial or product design. The designers will create useable and desirable products which are more toward the market as well as consumer. To defined a successful product is based on the profit earned.
Responsible Design
The design which is useful, useable, and desirable product to those who are largely ignored by the market. These designs can help/cope issues. Responsible design often relate to commercial design, but its primary intent is not a maximisation of profit, but instead to serve the underserved.
Experimental Design
A small part in design. The designers like to focus on exploration, experimentation as well as discovery. They think that the progress is more important than the outcome.
Discursive Design
The designs which basically is to communicate ideas. These works are generally less visible in market, but more often seen in exhibitions, print and film. The designers will use the works tp raise awareness and understanding on issues.
